Conference Field Trip: Walk the ancient City Wall of Athens with DIPYLON

We welcome you to a walk along the line of the ancient fortification wall of Athens, perhaps the most representative fragmented monument of the city, an excellent case study for the collaboration of Geography and Archaeology in an urban context. We will discover parts of the ancient city wall of Athens that lie beneath modern buildings hidden from the crowds. Away from the famous archaeological sites and in the commotion of modern Athens, lies a web of ancient remains that have been uncovered in rescue excavations over the years, fragments of a larger picture. The task of piecing these bits back together in order to reconstruct the whole monument (ancient fortification wall) is possible only through digital technology.

In order to better understand ancient topography, during the walk we will use the free of charge mobile app Walk the Wall Athens (
